Cheswick Council has two new faces.

Adis Halimic and Frank Stanish were appointed to council seats vacated by Kathy Gillard and William Kuzmirek. The terms expire at the end of next year.

Council made the appointments Tuesday.

Halimic, 43, has lived in Cheswick for 16 years. He was born in what’s now known as Bosnia and Herzegovina and came to the United States as a refugee in 1994.

“As I mature, and as my family grows, I felt like I needed to get more involved in the community,” Halimic said.

Halimic was in the U.S. military from 1997 to 2006 and was an Army officer in the early 2000s. He is employed by Balluff, an industrial sensor company.

He said he is pleased with how the borough and its government operate. He is looking forward to learning more about the borough’s finances and zoning, he said.

“I really enjoy being involved in the community and I also look forward to getting involved with different aspects of the local government,” he said.

Stanish, 59, has lived in Cheswick for most of his life. He is getting ready to retire from De Nora Water Technologies. He previously worked for 20 years in the auto industry.

“I’ve been exposed to a lot of different projects. … I’ve seen a lot, and I always thought I’d be able to help out toward a good use,” he said.

He said Cheswick has a lot of promise.

“Cheswick is a great place to raise a family,” he said. “I would like to see Cheswick get more younger families to move here.”

Both Stanish and Halimic said their previous work experience could be an asset on council.

Neither have held a political office, but both have been involved in the community: Stanish served a yearlong term on the Allegheny Valley Joint Sewer Authority Board last year, and Halimic was a coach and board member for the Harmar Soccer Club.

“The community was good to me when I was growing up. It prepared me for the life I live, and I’d like to give back,” Stanish said.

“I would like to see the town of Cheswick be as successful as possible for a small community.”
