Pittsburgh Police and SWAT units make their way down to Fisher Street after responding to a shooting incident a few blocks away along Engstler Street in the city’s St. Clair neighborhood Friday afternoon.

A woman was shot and killed by police Friday afternoon in Pittsburgh’s St. Clair neighborhood after she fired at police, authorities said.

Allegheny County 911 said police were called to the area around 3 p.m. for a call concerning a suspicious person in the 500 block of Engstler Street.

Pittsburgh’s SWAT team was then dispatched after shots were fired in the area, according to a Pittsburgh Public Safety spokeswoman.

Allegheny County Police said responding officers spoke to someone who directed them to an abandoned house. Officers spotted a woman inside.

Police said she “exited the residence with a pistol raised at officers.”

Officers returned fire and she was fatally wounded, county police reported.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman late Friday as Adrienne Arrington, 39, of Homestead.

No one else was found inside the house.

A Pittsburgh Public Safety spokeswoman said another woman was injured in connection with the incident, but was not wounded. The did not say how that woman was hurt, or her connection to the situation.

Pittsburgh police blocked off the intersection of Fisher Street and Mountain Avenue, a couple blocks away from the shooting scene.

Resident Carl Krauser, who lives nearby, said his 14-year-old daughter was headed toward that intersection on her way home from school when she heard loud noises and saw police.

“I was scared to death,” Krauser said. “She was really scared. … She called me and was like, ‘I know something happened because there’s cops and everything blocked off.’

“I’m worried. This is scary man, got my heart pumping.”

Krauser said his street is normally quiet, but could not say the same about neighboring areas.

He encouraged people to help police when they see or hear suspicious activity.

“Say something to somebody to help these people,” he said. “This is serious. People don’t usually say anything until something happens to one of their family members. Then they get the courage or might get the anger to say anything.”

Anyone with information about the shooting incident can contact Pittsburgh Police at 412-323-7800 or the Allegheny County Police Tips Line 833-ALL-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.
