Tyler Anderson, a Slippery Rock University senior dual dance and modern languages and cultures major from Allison Park, is among a select few college students working this summer through DIAL, the Diversity in Arts Leadership internship program, administered by the Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit organization that advances the arts and arts education. He is interning at the School of American Ballet in New York City.

“This is a really cool opportunity because it blends a whole bunch of my interests: diversity, dance, nonprofit work, and others,” Anderson said. “When I found out I was selected, I was already overwhelmed with excitement, but then when I saw I was placed with the School of American Ballet, that put me at a loss for words.”

As a part of his 10-week internship, Anderson is working within two SAB departments, the Advancement team and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team. He is working on a donor communication annual report and programming to diversify the student population and increase their exposure to local artists from diverse backgrounds.

Additionally, Anderson participated in “DIALogues,” an eight-part professional development collection created to “increase interns’ knowledge of arts administration through a cultural equity lens.” Each DIAL intern is also assigned a mentor outside of the organization to learn more about the arts and nonprofit sectors.

As a dual major at SRU, Anderson is interested in pursuing a graduate degree and a professional career that blends linguistics, dance and arts administration, as well as diversity and gender studies.

Pine-Richland High School graduate Norah Carter received Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation’s 2022 Community Service Scholarship. The scholarship was created to honor the memory of Jamie Ellenberger, an individual served by Passavant Memorial Homes Family of Services, who was an active member in the community. The principle of community is central to PMHFOS’s mission, to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and behavioral health needs to live successfully in the community.

PMHF aimed to award this scholarship to a student in the region who brings that same understanding of the value of community service, and this was found in Carter, who was presented with a check for $10,000 to be applied to her college tuition.

As the Community Service Chair for a local organization, Carter has led initiatives to support Operation Christmas Child, collected more than 800 canned goods and more than 150 coats for local charities, and raised more than $5,000 for Riding for the Handicapped of Western PA. Carter also realized that she had the ability to make a difference in the community by using her passion for mental health awareness to help other youth cope during the covid-19 pandemic. She developed and facilitated five educational workshops for tweens and teens that focused on resilience, healthy behaviors and adaptive coping using the 4-H Thoughts Matter and Health Rocks curriculums. As a result of the program, the youth participants articulated that they felt stronger, more confident and in better control of their lives. Carter’s hope is that they take these skills back to their own communities where they can impact their peers.

In addition to many other examples of community service activities, Carter has also tutored her peers as well as eighth grade students in her school district, is a care provider to a student with special needs, and serves as the National 4-H Youth Mental Health Ambassador, a role she has held since 2020.

She will be attending Denison University, in Granville, Ohio, in the fall, where she will be double majoring in philosophy, politics, and economics and global health.
