Thomas Jefferson, Baldwin musicals receive Gene Kelly Award nominations
Thomas Jefferson and Baldwin high school’s spring musicals received nominations for Pittsburgh’s Gene Kelly Awards.
Thomas Jefferson High School’s musical theater production of “Legally Blonde: The Musical” has earned seven nominations, including for Best Musical.
Thomas Jefferson’s “Legally Blonde” is one of two finalists for Best Musical in Budget Level III, competing against North Hills’ production of “Once Upon a Mattress” for the top honor. Best Musical will be selected in four budget categories.
In addition to Best Musical, TJ’s “Legally Blonde” has been nominated for Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Vocal Ensemble, Best Dance Ensemble and Best Crew/Technical Execution.
Additionally, TJ’s Rachael Parsons was selected as a Gene Kelly Awards semifinalist for Best Actress and Hayden Krupp was named a semifinalist for Best Supporting Actor.
“Legally Blonde” was directed by Jim Benedek, who teaches technology education at TJ. Julie Tipton, a TJ English and theater educator, was the assistant director and Michele Stoicovy, who teaches family and consumer science at TJ, coordinated costume design. Thomas Jefferson music educators Julie Lucci (vocal director) and Jim Mirabella (orchestra pit director) also were members of the musical production team.
Baldwin High School’s production of “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” garnered four nominations, including Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Quintin Michalski for Best Actor and Maxwell Pratley for Best Supporting Actor.
The Pittsburgh CLO’s 31st Annual Gene Kelly Awards will be held at the Benedum Center on Saturday, May 28 at 7:30 p.m.
