Power has been fully restored across Shaler Area School District’s buildings, and all schools will operate on a regular schedule Tuesday, a week after destructive storms caused widespread damage throughout the Pittsburgh region.
After initially planning to reopen schools Monday, Shaler Area used remote learning after losing all internet and phone service to all of its schools.
Despite planning to return to a regular schedule Tuesday, internet and phone service remain limited, the district said Monday. Internet is available at the middle school, Shaler Area Elementary and Burchfield and Scott primary schools.
Internet is unavailable at the high school and Marzolf and Reserve primary schools. The district also is unable to make or receive phone calls to or from outside phone numbers, which the district said will affect contacting schools.
Parents who need to reach their children’s school are encouraged to email staff directly or visit offices in-person.
“We want to assure families that, despite these ongoing service interruptions, fire alarm systems are operational in all buildings as of today and are capable of activating alarms and providing evacuation signals (auditable and visual) as needed,” the district notice said. “In the event of an emergency, building administrators have access to cellphones to ensure immediate communication with emergency services.”
Schools will share revised schedules for PSSA and AP exams.
