Plastic Bag Sleeping Mat Society Workshop

The Plastic Bag Sleeping Mat Society is having a workshop at St. James Church’ Gathering Space (in front of the parking lot) from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. May 26. The organization is seeking crocheters and plastic bag cutters to attend. Please bring scissors and plastic shopping bags to cut, and a ‘N’ hook if you are a crocheter — only knowledge of basic crochet stitches are needed. There will be extra bags for people who need them available.

The organization sent nine sleeping mats earlier this month to the refugees in Poland from the Ukraine, and hopes to send more. The mats are 36 inches by six-feet and are suitable for one adult and two children. This project not only helps people who are sleeping on the ground, but also eliminates plastic bags waste in our land fills. Call Joanne at 412-741-2368 with questions.

Sip, Scrub & Shrub

From 7-8:30 p.m. May 26, participants will make earth-friendly bath salts, body and lip scrubs while enjoying small bites and shrubs. What is a shrub? It’s a concentrated syrup beverage that combines fruit, sugar and vinegar. Please bring reusable glass jars or other containers in various sizes for the all-natural body products and help us make this a zero-waste event. The event is at the Fern Hollow Nature Center. Registration is $25 and pre-registration is required.

Countdown to kindergarten camp

This is a five-day multidisciplinary camp/workshop group designed to prepare your children for kindergarten. It will run from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Aug. 8-12. Registration deadline is Aug. 1 and cost is $300 per child.

Each day will offer fun and varied activities to promote language enrichment, fine and gross motor skills, socialization, and early academic knowledge. Staffed by Laughlin Children’s Center therapists and clinicians, children will participate in centers to engage with each discipline.

To register your child, call 412-741-4087.

Screenings

Not sure if your child needs clinical help such as speech, psychology, or occupational therapy? Perhaps your child needs academic tutoring or help with dyslexia. Laughlin Children’s Center offers low-cost screenings to determine if a complete evaluation would be beneficial. Contact info@laughlincenter.org or call 412-741-4087.
