Sewickley Academy graduation set for June 7
Sewickley Academy officials plan to send off their class of 2024 into their next chapters in life with inspiring words from a University of Pittsburgh medical professional.
Dr. Joseph Maroon, clinical professor of neurological science at Pitt’s Medical Center and the Heindl Scholar in neuroscience, will be the guest speaker at the private school’s commencement ceremony on June 7.
Doors at the Rea Auditorium on Academy Avenue in Sewickley open at 3 p.m. with graduation set for 4 p.m. There are 39 graduates.
Dr. Maroon is also the neurosurgical consultant with the Pittsburgh Steelers, a member of the NFL’s MTBI committee for concussions and medical director of World Wrestling Entertainment.
Head of Senior School Jamie Nestor said everyone is excited to hear from Dr. Maroon and celebrate the new alumnus’ future.
“As we honor this milestone, we look forward with pride and optimism, knowing our graduates are equipped to make a positive impact on the world. We are thrilled to celebrate them,” Nestor said.
Unlike most schools, academy graduates will not have a cap and gown.
Students have worn formal floor-length white clothing or navy sport coats with white shirts and academy ties since the first graduation in 1966.
Parking will be available on campus. A reception honoring graduates will take place on the lawn outside of the Hansen Library after graduation.
