Quaker Valley seniors mark their parking spaces in what has become a new tradition at the high school

Sometimes little perks like having your own parking space can really make a difference in the day.

Many Quaker Valley High School seniors will have no problem identifying which spot is theirs courtesy of a creative project.

The second annual Senior Painting Day took place Aug. 11.

Students who purchased parking permits were able to mark their territory with multiple colors and designs.

Ideas had to be approved by staff before paint went to pavement.

Art teacher Nina Strelec was one of the organizers.

“We are thrilled with this project and how excited our seniors have been to participate,” Strelec said. “This is our second year that we have had our seniors paint their parking spaces. Last year we had 20 seniors participating, and this year we have 41 seniors participating.

“We have had designated assigned parking spaces for all students who drive to school in the past, but last year we had senior Isabella Murano approach our principal, Dr. (Deborah) Riccobelli, with the idea. They both did research on other high schools that have done painting space painting. Dr. Riccobelli then proposed the plan to our district office, who approved.”

Several underclassmen assisted the seniors with their painting. Some of the spaces featured smiling suns, stained glass looks, planets, and the year 2024, while others opted to write their name in big, bold letters.

”It is such a great way for the students to not only get excited about the school year, but also create a sense of community,” Stelec said. “It gives them a sense of ownership of that space and they are so proud of their work. … It’s a great way for the students to express their individual personalities.”

The first day of school was Aug. 23.
