In brief: QV alum inducted into HOF, Savor Sewickley and more

Cibulas inducted into Hall of Fame

Rachel Cibulas Cirinelli, along with the 2012 and 2013 women’s lacrosse teams, was inducted into Adrian College’s Hall of Fame at a ceremony on the Adrian Campus on Sept. 27. She played lacrosse at Quaker Valley High School, where she graduated from in 2002. She went on to play for Robert Morris University’s first women’s lacrosse team.

Coach Cibulas earned the program’s second consecutive MWLC Championship, finishing the year with a program-high of 17 wins and a perfect 7-0 conference record. The team went on to win the MWLC Tournament and earned a spot in the NCAA playoffs. She won the MWLC Coach of the Year Award, while her players racked up nine All-Conference Selections and four All-Region selections. The 2013 team enjoyed similar success and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Hard-to-recycle collection

Pennsylvania Resources Council will host its final hard-to-recycle collection event of the year from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 26 in Leetsdale Industrial Park to enable area residents to responsibly recycle a wide variety of items not accepted in curbside collection such as televisions, computers, other e-waste, tires and small Freon appliances. Participants must register in advance at prc.org/CollectionEvents or by calling 412-488-7490.

Fundraising continues

Fundraising continues for Sewickley’s annual Light Up Night, 5-9 p.m. Dec. 6.

It is a holiday tradition that dates back at least 40 years. Thousands flock to the borough for food, music, entertainment, shopping and fun.

Sponsorship opportunities are available. People can make tax-deductible monetary donations up to and including celebration night. Donation options include Venmo and PayPal. Links to both are available on the borough website, sewickleyborough.org.

Savor Sewickley

The Friends of the Sewickley Public Library are hosting the 23rd annual Savoring Sewickley at the Sewickley Public Library on Nov. 3 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Come and sample small plates from local restaurants and enjoy beer, wine and soft drinks in a casual atmosphere. Thriller Picture Show

The Pittsburgh Moving Picture Festival’s Thriller Picture Show is returning to The Lindsay for the second year in a row. The festival runs Oct. 11-14 and will include a variety of exciting features and short film screenings throughout the weekend. There will also be a showing of George Romero’s 1988 horror thriller “Monkey Shines” on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. For more information, visit thelindsaytheater.org.

Halloween event set

Three Rivers Karting Entertainment Park presents Trunk-or-Treat from 6-9 p.m. Oct 23 at 541 Avenue B in Leetsdale. The event is free and open to the public.

Fire safety fair

The Quaker Valley Fire Safety Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 12 on Broad Street in Sewickley (between Beaver and Thorn). There will be fire trucks, emergency vehicles, equipment demonstrations, kids activities, food trucks and more.

This is a free community event that is hosted by the Quaker Valley Fire Safety Committee, which is made up of the Aleppo Township Volunteer Fire Company, Big Sewickley Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Cochran Hose Company, Emsworth Volunteer Fire Company, Fair Oaks Volunteer Fire Department, Leetsdale Fire Department.

Fall StoryWalks

The Sewickley Public Library and community partners invite you to grab the family and take a stroll through any and all of the five Sewickley StoryWalk locations through Oct. 13 — Allegheny Land Trust’s Audubon Greenway, Fern Hollow Nature Center, Henle Park in Leetsdale, Mary Roberts Rinehart Nature Park and the Ohio Township Nature Center.

A StoryWalk places pages from a children’s picture book along a walking path so that children and their caregivers may enjoy nature and reading together.

Visitors are invited to scan the QR codes at the end of each walk to enter to win copies of the StoryWalk books. Location details and featured titles are available at sewickleylibrary.org/storywalk.

MGA Fundraiser

The Myasthenia Gravis Association of Western PA will hold its second annual Tour and Tasting Fundraiser to benefit the organization’s free patient support services on Oct. 27 at McLaughlin Distillery, 3799 Blackburn Road, Sewickley Hills. There will be two tours of the distillery that day — 1:15-2:30 p.m. and 2:30-3:45 p.m. Tickets will be sold for $40 for two people.

Participants will be treated to a tour of the distillery and after the tour they will participate in a tasting event of some of the 40+ bourbons, whiskeys, vodkas and flavored moonshine products created by McLaughlin Distillery. There will also be a 50/50 drawing, a bottle raffle, and more.
