In brief: New glass recycling location, child communication program and more around Sewickley

Glass recycling

Quaker Valley Council of Governments has established another glass recycling location, at 629 New Brighton Road in Avalon across from its public works facility. The dumpster hauling and glass recycling service will be provided by Michael Brothers Hauling & CAP Glass. It is available from dawn to dusk each day and is open to all Quaker Valley COG communities. Glass containers must be rinsed of any perishable debris prior to being recycled. Adhesive labels and container lids do not need to be removed prior to being recycled. Items such as mirrors, porcelain dishware and light bulbs will not be accepted. More information is available by calling 412-766-7458.

Laughlin Children’s Center

Laughlin Children’s Center Hosts a Once a Week, six-session workshop for children ages 4 to 6 to develop pragmatic language, fine motor and gross motor skills. Communicating With Purpose begins on June 15 and continues on June 20, 22, June 27, June 29 and July 6.

The clinician-led group will help children enrich their skills while learning to carry over their learning into various environments. Materials, such as visual supports, will aid the children and caregivers in both the home setting and community. A caregiver is encouraged to stay and participate with their child.

Schedule: 9-10 a.m.

Day 2 – Sharing

Day 3 – Restaurant Skills

Day 4 – Turn-Taking

Day 5 – Working Together

Day 6 – Fun at the Playground

Mallory DeMico and Olivia Ganley from Laughlin Children’s Center will lead the sessions. DeMico earned a master’s degree in speech therapy, and Ganley earned her master’s degree in occupational therapy.

Blessing of the Bicycles

All ages are welcome to attend the second annual Blessing of the Bicycles, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 11 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 616 Washington St. in Sewickley (right behind the Sewickley Municipal Building.) The event is co-sponsored by Child Health Association of Sewickley and Communicycle of Aliquippa. Experts will be on hand to provide bicycle inspections and teach safety and maintenance tips. Free helmets will be given away while supplies last and free hot dogs and chips will be provided for all in attendance. Communicycle will also be taking donations of used bikes.

Juneteenth Art & Music Festival

The Sewickley Community Center will host a Juneteenth Art & Music Festival on June 18 from noon-6 p.m. It is free and open to the public. There will be live music featuring The Flow Band, Ibeji Drum Ensemble and more, as well as children’s activities, vendors, a raffle, tours of the center, swimming ($2) and more. Senior Men’s Club

An affiliate of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, the Senior Men’s Club will host Sgt. Glenn Young of Sgt. Young’s Safety ProgramMission Aviation Fellowship’s Peter Santana on June 10 at the YMCA. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for an informal social gathering followed by the presentation at 10. The Federal Bureau of Investigation will discuss senior fraud and scams on June 17.

Fully vaccinated individuals are not required to wear a mask. Nonvaccinated individuals are requested to wear a mask. For more information, visit smensclub.org.

Greater Pittsburgh Business Connection

The Greater Pittsburgh Business Connection, a referral group of business professionals, will meet June 15 at the Eat’n Park on Route 60 in Robinson Township for breakfast from 7:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Speakers will be Joe Rozman of Rozman Human Resource Services and Jim Kernick of Kernick’s Auto Center.
