Sewickley Memorial Day events

Sewickley’s Memorial Day celebration will begin on May 29 with a Veterans Memorial Service at Sewickley United Methodist Church at 11 a.m.

On May 30, the 129th Annual Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. There will be a program at Wolcott Park immediately following the parade, and then a program at Sewickley Cemetery after that.

Memorial Day Parade

American Legion Post 924 in Coraopolis will holt its annual Memorial Day parade at 1:30 p.m. May 29 in Coraopolis, along Fifth Avenue. Grand Marshalls this year will highlight two of Coraopolis’ own WWII veterans, Danny LaRocca and Bob Massamini.

Upcoming meetings

Shade Tree Commission will meet at 7 p.m. June 6 at the Sewickley borough building, 601 Thorn St. The meeting is open to the public. Anyone interested in learning more about trees in the borough should attend.

The Sewickley zoning hearing board will meet at 7 p.m. June 7 at the borough building.

Military banner program change

Sewickley resident John Dunn announced he is no longer taking care of the borough’s military banner program. He said he could no longer properly maintain the nearly 170 banners after three years of volunteering. Families of veterans would purchase banners honoring current service men and women, or recognizing those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Dunn would then install them on poles throughout the borough.

Sewickley council president Cynthia Mullins said the work will be handled by borough staff.

Night Mart vendor spots open

Applications for Sewickley Night Marts are open to local artisans, bands and food vendors. No commercial vendors will be accepted.

Applications are available through the Sewickley Chamber of Commerce. Deadline to apply is May 31. Those who apply after that will be considered for a waiting list. Costs are $55 for artisans and $65 for food vendors. Payment is due at time of acceptance. Acceptance emails will be sent out by June 4.

Night Marts are from 6-9 p.m. June 24, July 29 and Aug. 26.

Sewickley Presbyterian Church

Marianne Cornetti, an internationally-known opera star who is also currently the artistic director of Pittsburgh Festival Opera, served as the Mezzo-soprano soloist/Alto section leader at Sewickley Presbyterian Church from 1990-1994. She will return to the church to participate in the 11 a.m. worship service on May 29.

St. Matthews AME Zion

Stop by St. Matthews AME Zion Church on the corner of Walnut and Thorn streets during the Memorial Day parade for free hotdogs and water.

Senior Men’s Club

An affiliate of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, the Senior Men’s Club will host Mission Aviation Fellowship’s Peter Santana on June 3 at the YMCA. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for an informal social gathering followed by the presentation at 10. Sgt. Glenn Young of Sgt. Young’s Safety Program, will speak on kids in danger on June 10.

Fully vaccinated individuals are not required to wear a mask. Nonvaccinated individuals are requested to wear a mask. For more information, visit smensclub.org.

Greater Pittsburgh Business Connection

The Greater Pittsburgh Business Connection, a referral group of business professionals, will meet June 1 at the Eat’n Park on Route 60 in Robinson Township for breakfast from 7:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Speakers will be Suzette McCarrell of McCarrell Landscape Construction and Stephanie Milazzo of Mary Kay Cosmetics.
