Shade Tree moves

Sewickley council accepted the resignation of Katie Kirsch from the Shade Tree Commission, and appointed Mary Jablonski to the Shade Tree Commission. Both actions took place at council’s July 12 meeting.

Evaluation planned

Sewickley council approved Gateway Engineers to complete a financial evaluation to restore and upgrade the Sewickley Wastewater Treatment Plant. It was unclear how much the evaluation would cost or how long it may take.

Library activities set

Sewickley Public Library hosts Let’s Talk About Murder, a virtual true crime discussion group, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. July 25. It is open to people ages 18 and older. The theme of the month is vacation.

The library hosts a French Conversation group from 2 to 3 p.m. July 28. People can practice speaking French. The group is for folks who have an intermediate knowledge of French. The group meets both in-person and online.

Free family event

Join the Sewickley Valley YMCA on July 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. for a free family event to celebrate National Parents’ Day. You and your family can enjoy swimming in the large pool, outdoor games on the Y’s athletic field and cool treats. Membership and registration are not required. Music Explorer Camp

Allegheny Music Academy’s Music Explorer Camp will take place 1 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 15-19 at St. Stephen’s Church. Campers ages 7-14 are welcome. Cost is $340, with 10% off if paid by July 15. Renowned faculty will teach brass, woodwind, percussion, guitar, ukulele, keyboard, strings, choir and more. Backyard composting workshop

Learn the benefits of backyard composting, including the overall process, methods for setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways to use finished compost at Fern Hollow Nature Center on July 28. The workshop, led by Pennsylvania Resources Council, will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The $70 course fee includes an 82-gallon compost bin. For more information or to register, visit prc.org.

Hard-to-recycle event

Pennsylvania Resources Council will hold a hard-to- recycle collection July 23 at Quaker Valley High School in Leetsdale. For a fee, individuals can drop off televisions and computer monitors, printers, fluorescent tubes, small Freon appliances and tires (with and without rims). At no cost, individuals can drop off cell/home phones, computer towers and peripheral equipment (keyboards, laptops, mice, etc.), expanded polystyrene packaging material, microwave ovens, video game consoles/DVD players and glass bottles, jugs and jars.

Participants must register in advance at prc.org/Collection Events or by calling 412-488-7490, ext. 1.

Senior Men’s Club

An affiliate of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, the Senior Men’s Club will host the Sewickley Valley Historical Society ­­­— Mary Beth Pastorus will discuss historical architecture in the Sewickley Valley on July 22. On July 29, the topic will be the United States Coast Guard Station Pittsburgh and USCG Osage river operations.

The Greater Pittsburgh Business Connection, a referral group of business professionals, will meet July 27 at the Eat’n Park on Route 60 in Robinson Township for breakfast from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. Speakers will be Jenny Foster of Choice Background Checks and Jen Rosa of Cruise Planners.
