5 things to do in Pittsburgh this weekend: Dec. 16-18
‘Tis the season for holiday music, theater and partying and, from the classics to prog rock to on-screen hilarity, Pittsburgh is filled with it this weekend.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra
The Trans-Siberian Orchestra is back in Pittsburgh for 2022 with the return of “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve: The Best of TSO and More” at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday at 3 and 7:30 p.m.
The prog rockers are bringing what they call a “completely updated presentation” of their holiday show — but fear not, as you can still expect to hear “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24,” “Oh Come All Ye Faithful,” “Good King Joy,” “Christmas Canon,” “Music Box Blues,” “Promises to Keep,” and “This Christmas Day.” The tour stop also features a second set of TSO’s greatest hits, including “Wizards in Winter,” “A Mad Russian’s Christmas,” and more.
Tickets are available for both the matinee and evening shows. The matinee tickets are going fast with only Lexus Loge box (suite) tickets available for $104 and single tickets for $52. Tickets for the evening show range from $52 to $104.50. For more information, call 412-642-1800.
A Musical Christmas Carol
The holidays are not complete without experiencing Charles Dickens’ “Christmas Carol” in some form. This weekend, the Pittsburgh CLO’s “A Musical Christmas Carol” continues at the Byham Theater in Downtown Pittsburgh. Michael Cerveris stars as the miserly character who totally redeems himself by the end of a nightmarish night before Christmas. There are six shows to choose from, beginning Friday night at 7 p.m. Saturday’s schedule provides a triple header with shows at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets for the morning show are priced as low as $15. The Sunday schedules features noon and 4 p.m. show times. Call 412-456-6666 or go to trustarts.org for information.
Pittsburgh Santa Crawl
When it comes to beverage consumption, I imagine Santa Claus being a guy who pretty much sticks to non-alcoholic eggnog. But he probably won’t find much of that during Saturday’s Pittsburgh Santa Crawl, a holiday themed bar crawl on the city’s South Side from 2 to 10 p.m. featuring more than 10 bars. Organizers call it an opportunity to “explore the city and celebrate the holiday season one bar at a time.” Tickets are priced at $20 in advance and $40 the day of, and include a refillable Santa mug, access to South Side bars including Mario’s, The Flats on Carson, Skybar, Fin McCools and more, and food and drink specials. Participants are encouraged to dress festively and drink responsibly. For more information, visit thepittsburghsantacrawl.com .
Chatham Baroque Art of the Trio – Holiday Edition
For those looking for some classical Christmas sounds this weekend, Chatham Baroque is presenting a special holiday edition of its The Art of the Trio series. The program is a mix of rarely heard pieces blended with holiday season favorites, including selections by Bach, Marais and more. Performances are scheduled for Friday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Nicholas Church in Millvale, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in East Liberty.
Tickets are $40 for adults, $35 for seniors (65+), and $20 for students. For tickets and more information, visit chathambaroque.org.
‘Elf’ at Tull Family Theater
How about a little holiday hilarity this weekend? The Tull Family Theater in Sewickley has the movie that keeps Santa lovers in stitches, “Elf,” starring Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel . “Elf” will be shown Friday at 12:30 p.m. and Saturday at 5:30 p.m. It’s been called a new Christmas classic for the 21st century, but whether it goes on to replace “It’s a Wonderful Life” in the hearts of holiday revelers remains to be seen. However, few would argue that it’s Ferrell’s best work on the big screen to date and one of the funniest Christmas movies ever made. For tickets, visit thetullfamilytheater.org.
