Security hired to patrol vacant Century III Mall
West Mifflin Council learned Wednesday that the owners of Century III Mall have hired 24/7 security to patrol the site.
Las Vegas-based Moonbeam Capital Investments LLC, which obtained the property in 2013, has also hired an engineer to assess Century III.
Residents packed Wednesday’s council meeting to demand answers on the fate of the mall, which many said is a hazard and security risk, according to Tribune-Review news partner WPXI.
Fire officials told council the site creates hazardous conditions for firefighters who’ve been called to Century III multiple times in the past year. They cited cracks and holes in the roof.
Donald Brucker, Allegheny County chief deputy fire marshal, said there is mold and broken glass, and that several sections of the ceiling are leaning or sagging.
West Mifflin police Chief Gregory McCulloch said trespassing and vandalism are rampant.
Borough council plans to lobby local, county, and federal officials for assistance in securing the $15 million cost to raze the building.
On Wednesday, council said it will decide the mall’s ultimate fate at a future public meeting.
