A project in Pittsburgh’s Stanton Heights will bring traffic-calming measures, pedestrian safety improvements and a dedicated uphill bicycle lane to Stanton Avenue.

The city’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure said Tuesday that one lane of Stanton Avenue will be closed to traffic because of the project. Flaggers will help direct traffic.

The department said the first phase of work will include installing four speed cushions. The raised cushions are designed with wheel cutouts meant to allow fire and EMS vehicles to pass through without slowing down.

Signs and pavement markings will be installed to warn motorists of the speed cushions.

Data collected in 2019 showed that more than three-quarters of the vehicles traveling on Stanton Avenue traveled faster than the posted speed limit of 25 mph.

City officials said the rate of speeding — along with the area’s crash history — demonstrated the need for safety improvements in the area.

The first phase of work is expected to take two days to complete, weather permitting. Construction will occur daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Temporary no-parking signs will be posted along the street where work is being done.

The next phase of work, expected to begin later this month, will include installing upgraded signage, pavement markings, flex posts meant to improve pedestrian crossings and the uphill bicycle climbing lanes.
