State police in Somerset said a woman was killed on Route 30 near Stoystown Wednesday after her car collided head-on with a dump truck.
Troopers said witnesses reported the woman was driving eastbound, approaching the Haines School Road intersection ,when she crossed the centerline and drove into the path of the westbound dump truck about 9:40 a.m. The accident closed the highway section in Quemahoning Township for more than three hours as troopers investigated.
The victim’s identity was not released pending notification of next of kin.
Trooper Jordan Shaulis said in a news release that the driver of the truck attempted to avoid the collision to no avail. Shaulis said the force of the collision forced the victim’s car backward 80 feet and caused it to collide with a second eastbound vehicle.
The truck then drove off the north side of the highway and struck several trees before coming to rest in a yard. None of the occupants in the other two vehicles, who were not identified in police reports, required hospital treatment.
The victim was flown by medical helicopter to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, where she died from her injuries.
Witnesses said the victim appeared to have difficultly staying in her lane prior to the crash.
Boswell and Jennerstown volunteer firefighters and Somerset Ambulance assisted at the scene.
