What would you do with the Mega Millions jackpot?
The Mega Millions lottery game is living up to its name this week, with a jackpot of more than $800 million that could be won during the drawing on Tuesday night.
Here’s what some people in the region would do if they won the jackpot:
Sue Muller of Greensburg has a plan if she wins.
“I’d probably give a lot of it away, after taking care of the kids,” Muller said.
But, “I can’t imagine winning,” she said.
Jackie Purtell of Brackenridge said she wouldn’t have to think hard on how to splurge if she hit big.
“I’d buy a house, and I’d buy one for my son-in-law and grandkids,” she said. “Maybe a new car, too.”
Thomas Murray of Etna said he would use the money to help others.
“I’d like to help my family and friends and there’s a couple of charities I’d like to give to like St. Jude’s Hospital, Wounded Warriors and the American Cancer Society, but there’s not a lot I want for myself,” Murray said.
Jill Miller of Export said she would help her family if she won.
“I feel lucky every day of my life to be alive,” Miller said. “(I would) pay my daughter’s college off, take care of my daughter and my mother. I probably wouldn’t even quit my job. I’d probably keep working because I love my job. I’m a nurse.”
Jennifer Supak of Murrysville said winning would be a great seventh anniversary present. She bought tickets Monday at her husband’s request.
“Tomorrow’s our anniversary, so that would be nice,” Supak said. “I’d pay all my bills off, all my kids’ bills. I would be smart about it. I would do something, but I would want to pay everything off and make sure I was investing correctly.”
If someone is lucky, really lucky enough to win after buying a ticket at the Greensburg News Stand, then Allan Lydic, the store owner, said he will benefit from their winning the giant jackpot.
“I’ll get $100,000. I’m hopeful for them (ticket buyers),” Lydic said.
Many customers who are playing Mega Millions have never played it before.
In addition to the regular Mega Millions customers who stop and play that lottery at Gateway Convenience, “They’ve all been buying Mega Millions tickets and they’ve never played, but when it gets this high, they just have to,” said Aspen Jobe of Greensburg, a clerk at Gateway Convenience in Greensburg.
Jobe and fellow clerk Ashley Grimme of Greensburg, have been strategizing what numbers to pick for the drawing by looking at past winners, Jobe said.
If they are lucky enough to split the jackpot, Jobe said she will go to the beach in the Bahamas where pigs run free and Grimme said she will travel around Europe.
Ahad Ansari, owner of the Plum Convenience store on Saltsburg Road, said sales of Mega Millions tickets are up 35% to 40% since the jackpot increased.
“It’s definitely busier than usual,” he said Monday afternoon, anticipating even more sales Tuesday ahead of the drawing that night.
But a big jackpot means more than just selling more lottery tickets. Ansari, who also owns a convenience store on Freeport Road in Harrison, said it means more business for his store.
“It always helps when the jackpot goes up. More people come in the store than usual,” he said. “I can make new customers. It’s good for the business for sure also.”
