Wegmans announced Monday it is planning to open a location along Cool Springs Drive in Cranberry, its first store in the Pittsburgh region.

The New York-based supermarket chain operates more than 100 stores in the Eastern United States. As of January, its closest locations to Pittsburgh were in Erie and State College.

In a news release, Wegmans said the 115,000-square-foot store will be on 13 acres of land adjacent to the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. That will place it among other residential and commercial developments in Cranberry between Interstate 79 and Route 228.

“We’ve received thousands of requests for a Wegmans in the Pittsburgh region since opening our first Pennsylvania store over 30 years ago,” said Dan Aken, vice president of real estate and store planning, in the release. “We’re excited to have finally found the right location to bring Wegmans to the Pittsburgh area.”

Wegmans anticipates taking on 400 to 500 employees for the location, most of whom are expected to be local hires.

Wegmans offered no timeline for construction or opening but noted the store’s role as a “community partner.”

“We are delighted that Wegmans has chosen Cranberry Township as its first location in the Pittsburgh area,” township Manager Daniel Santoro said in the release.
