Week-in-review: Protests outside Pittsburgh Mayor Peduto's home tops this week's news
Protests outside the home of Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, a motorcycle run in memory of a slain New Kensington police officer, a long-time Pittsburgh radio personality going off the air, a fatal crash between a train and a truck and a lawsuit against Chipotle were among the top news reported by the Tribune-Review this week.
Protesters gather outside Peduto’s home
Motivated by an activist’s controversial arrest, protesters gathered outside Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto’s Point Breeze home this week.
Protesters were there Sunday night to decry the “low-visibility arrest” of Matthew Carter in Oakland. They returned on Tuesday, but Peduto was not seen and it was unclear if the mayor was home. They were dispersed Wednesday morning after police declared it an unlawful gathering. While Peduto said he defends First Amendment rights to peacefully protest, he condemned disturbing residents through the night.
Peduto did speak with protesters on his porch Wednesday night, but the discussion broke down and ended with police again dispersing the crowds.
Motorcycle run honors slain New Kensington officer
About 400 motorcycles took part in a two-hour ride in honor of slain New Kensington police Officer Brian Shaw.
The third annual ride started at the Pittsburgh Syria Shriners center in Harmar and made its way throughout the Alle-Kiski Valley.
Shaw was shot and killed during a traffic stop in November 2017. Proceeds from the motorcycle ride benefit the Officer Brian Shaw Scholarship Fund.
Cris Winter announces departure from WISH 99.7
After working nearly 40 years in Pittsburgh, radio personality Cris Winter announced she was dismissed from WISH 99.7.
Winter suggested her dismissal was because of cuts attributed to the covid-19 pandemic.
Winter said she will continue posting on social media about music, concerts, pop culture and defending animals.
Truck driver killed at Cheswick train crossing
A 55-year-old man from Easton died in a collision between a truck and a train in Cheswick.
Allegheny County Police said the truck driver, David Nezekiah Howell, was crossing the rails when he noticed the Norfolk Southern coal train approaching and began backing “to no avail.”
The trailer was pushed into the side of a building next to the crossing, with the smashed cab spun around into the back of the building.
Lawsuit accuses Chipotle of keeping the change
A lawsuit filed in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court accuses burrito shop Chipotle of not giving customers proper change.
The complaint claims the restaurant is rounding change down. Attorney Frank Salpietro, who filed the complaint, said it’s happening at many Pittsburgh area stores, and expects the company to blame a national coin shortage brought on by the covid-19 pandemic in defending its actions.
The state Attorney General’s Office said it has gotten five complaints about being short-changed at Chipotle. The lawsuit seeks class-action status.
