Greater Latrobe Junior High School is located on the district’s secondary school campus in Unity Township.

It was a week of mourning and concern across the Pittsburgh area.

The news included the tragic death of a promising University of Pittsburgh student, and several Mt. Pleasant students being hurt in a car crash.

Crime news included Ex-Steeler Antonio Brown making headlines again, and a Latrobe man being charged with raping a woman at a New Year’s Eve party.

A look back at some of the top stories of the week.

Pitt student remembered

University of Pittsburgh senior Barbara Como was being remembered as a bright and promising student by faculty and fellow students.

Como, 20, of Chester Springs, Chester County, died after she was hit by a Port Authority bus near De Soto Street and Fifth Avenue in Oakland Saturday.

Como was planning to graduate this spring with degrees in psychology and anthropology.

The unidentified bus driver was put on paid leave during an investigation.

Mt. Pleasant students hurt in crash

Five Mt. Pleasant Area High School students and a recent graduate were hurt in a two-vehicle, head-on crash Monday on Claypike Road in Mt. Pleasant Township.

Superintendent Timothy Gabauer they were all in good spirits and concerned about one another, and that a few of them will have a long road to full recovery.

State police said the driver of a pickup traveling east lost control around a bend in the road and slammed into the front of another pickup headed westbound, police said. Both drivers and four passengers were hospitalized.

Latrobe man charged with rape

A Latrobe man was arraigned Tuesday on charges of raping and sexually assaulting an unconscious woman at a New Year’s Eve party in Hempfield.

Hunter J. Hoyle, 20, declined to comment as he was led from District Judge Mark Mansour’s office to be transported to the county jail.

According to police, the woman and Hoyle attended a Dec. 31 party on Hurst Road.

Antonio Brown turns himself in

Former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Antonio Brown surrendered to police at the Broward County Jail in Florida Thursday night.

TMZ reported that Brown allegedly chucked rocks at a moving truck after a dispute over a $4,000 bill for moving his belongings cross-country.

Brown faces charges of burglary with battery, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and criminal mischief.

Wrestling team hazing incident

Greater Latrobe School District and state police are investigating an alleged hazing incident involving the junior high wrestling team.

No details were released. State police Trooper Steve Limani said it was being investigated as an assault.

The team has completed section wrestling matches, but two exhibition tournaments and an exhibition match were canceled as a result of the investigation, Superintendent Georgia Teppert said.
