Week in review: Market Square fire, Pirates' Felipe Vazquez charged, 'A Beautiful Day' premiere

The past week in Western Pennsylvania featured a fire in Market Square, child porn charges filed against suspended Pirates’ relief pitcher Felipe Vazquez and the debut of the Mister Rogers movie. Here’s a look back at some of the top stories of the week.

Hemp-drying facility reopens

A hemp-drying facility in Jeannette reopened during the weekend after ventilation was added, while current and former employees said they still have not been paid for weeks of work. City code enforcement Officer Bill Whetzel said Patriot Shield Security was permitted to reopen on a temporary basis after an inspection late Friday.

A group of employees visited the facility Monday — some said they heard co-workers got paid and others said company officials told them to come there that day. But there were no paychecks and the police apparently were called after employees got angry.

Felipe Vazquez charged with child porn

Prosecutors filed 21 new charges Tuesday against suspended Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Felipe Vazquez after investigators found evidence of child pornography on devices they say he owned.

Vazquez, 28, was ordered to stand trial on 10 counts of child pornography, 10 counts of unlawful contact with a minor and a single charge of corruption of minors in addition to sex crime accusations filed in September in connection with the alleged assault of a 13-year-old girl in Scottdale.

Chelsa Wagner mistrial

A Michigan jury on Wednesday found Allegheny County Controller Chelsa Wagner not guilty of disturbing the peace during a confrontation with Detroit police but could not reach a verdict on a more serious charge of resisting and obstructing officers.

Wagner was accused of interfering with Detroit police March 6 as they prepared to remove her husband, Khari Mosley, from the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel, after staff said he was being unruly. The couple were in Detroit for a concert. A mistrial was declared on the felony charge and it’s unclear whether prosecutors plan to re-try the case.

'A Beautiful Day' premieres

It was a beautiful night in the neighborhood in Pittsburgh as the Mister Rogers movie debuted this week, both with a private screening and the film’s public release.

A red carpet gala and special screening of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” took place Wednesday at the SouthSide Works Cinema in Pittsburgh.

The film stars Tom Hanks and Matthew Rhys as Fred Rogers and fictional journalist Lloyd Vogel.

Rogers’ wife Joanne Rogers, director Marielle Heller, and Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto attended.

The movie opened worldwide Friday, though many local theaters began screening the film on Thursday.

Market Square fire

A four-alarm fire at lunchtime Thursday heavily damaged a popular Market Square restaurant. Authorities were still investigating the cause of the blaze, in the floors above Winghart’s at 5 Market Square.

The fire was reported shortly before noon and was upgraded to a four-alarm blaze by 12:25 p.m., officials said. By 1:30 p.m., firefighters had the fire under control and authorities began their investigation. One firefighter was hurt and taken to UPMC Mercy for treatment. Pittsburgh Public Safety officials said it’s too early to know what caused the fire.
