Walkers, and their pups, take on this earlier Walk 93 at the Flight 93 National Memorial.

Walkers will again lace up their sneakers and make a recreational and educational visit to the Flight 93 National Memorial for the fifth annual Walk 93.

The Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial will host the event, starting at 10 a.m. Oct. 12.

“It’s an all-ages event. Participants are welcome to bring their dogs, too,” says Brooke Neel, memorial director of programs.

A ranger will lead participants on the 2.28-mile walk over the wetlands bridge, down to the Wall of Names and up the Western Overlook Trail.

Walkers will hear insight into the memorial’s architectural design, the living memorial landscape and sustainable initiatives at Flight 93 including the memorial groves, reforestation and the pollinator project.

The immersive program will include interpretive stops along the trail to tell the story of United Flight 93’s 40 passengers and crew members.

The memorial honors those aboard the plane when terrorists overtook and crashed it on Sept. 11, 2001.

Funds raised through earlier walks supported special projects the National Park Service designated.

Starting this year, annual funds raised will support completion of the original memorial design, including future connections to the September 11th National Memorial Trail, as well as benches, trail development, tree planting, grove maintenance and more.

“Pretty much from here on out, we are just going to be raising funds to complete the memorial design. That gives us more breadth to (help meet) the National Park Service’s needs,” Neel says.

The walk is non-competitive and meant to encourage reflection about the events of 9/11.
