Trib Total Media is expanding its Journalism Scholarship Program with the Scholarship for Diversity in Media.

The new scholarship will be awarded to a student who is culturally, ethnically or racially diverse and studying journalism, communication or English writing. The scholarship will include financial assistance of up to $7,500 a year for four years, a guaranteed annual internship with Trib Total Media and an offer for full-time employment upon graduation.

“Minorities and those from diverse backgrounds are traditionally underrepresented in the media,” Trib Total Media President and CEO Jennifer Bertetto said. “Through this scholarship, we hope to encourage promising young journalists from diverse backgrounds to pursue a career in our industry and help bring diversity to local media.”

The Scholarship for Diversity in Media is open to minorities as defined by the Equal Employment Opportunity Program. Applicants must be current high school seniors who plan to pursue a major in journalism, English writing or communications at an accredited four-year college or university. They must remain in an approved course of study through graduation.

This marks the second scholarship offered through Trib Total Media’s Journalism Scholarship Program, which launched in 2019 with the Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship.

The Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship was founded to honor Tribune-Review managing editor Jim Borden, who joined Trib Total Media in April 2011. He passed away seven years later due to complications of cancer.

“Jim was a dedicated, passionate newsman who was known for his unquenchable curiosity and his desire to ‘comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable,’” Tribune-Review Executive Editor Susan McFarland said. “I can think of no better way to honor his legacy than through this scholarship.”

The Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship is offered to students attending — or planning to attend — a four-year college or university to study journalism, English writing or communication. One student is selected for this scholarship each year. The recipient will earn up to $30,000 in scholarship money awarded in annual installments of up to $7,500, an annual summer internship with Trib Total Media and an offer for full-time employment upon graduation.

Trib Total Media is now accepting applications for both the Scholarship for Diversity in Media and the Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship. Applicants can apply online under the Career and Scholarship Opportunities tab.

The deadline to apply is January 31.
