Trib takes home 8 awards from Society of Professional Journalists

The Tribune-Review was recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists for its investigation of sex offenders housed at local nursing home.

The Tribune-Review won eight awards from the Pennsylvania chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for work published in 2021.

The awards were presented this week at the Keystone News Conference in Harrisburg. The awards recognize excellence in written, audio and video journalism across the state.

In the Spotlight category, the society’s highest honor, the Trib took home third place for its investigation of convicted sex offenders housed in local nursing and personal care homes. Writers contributing to the stories were Susan McFarland, Debra Erdley, Tony LaRussa and Natasha Lindstrom.

The Trib also won third place in the society’s category of Best Overall Newspaper.

In the category of Environmental Reporting, writer Mary Ann Thomas won second place for her report on the comeback of endangered mussels in the Kiski River.

In the category of Feature Reporting, writer Paul Guggenheimer and photographer Kristina Serafini won second place for their report on how 9-11 affected the daily lives of Western Pennsylvania first responders.

Writer Tim Benz won second place in the category of Sports Features for his story about PNC Park remaining one of the best baseball stadiums in the country 20 years after its opening.

In the category of Editorial Writing, Lori Falce won third place for a collection of editorials.

The Trib also won second place in the category of headline writing and third place in Feature Page Design.
