From Aug. 14 to Oct. 21, Walmart Supercenters across the country are offering 320 free, socially distanced drive-in movies in 160 store parking lots, shown in partnership with the Tribeca Film Festival.
All locations in the Pittsburgh area are sold out, including Walmart stores in North Huntingdon and West Mifflin. The website, however, says to check back soon for added events.
“We recognize the challenges our customers and their families have faced over the last few months and we wanted to create an experience where they could come together safely to create new memories,” Janey Whiteside, chief customer officer at Walmart, said in a statement. “The Walmart Drive-in is one small way we’re supporting the communities we serve.”
At the Walmart Drive-in, masks must be worn outside of vehicles, vehicles will be socially distanced in parking spaces, one car is permitted per ticket and alcohol is prohibited.
The gates open at 6 p.m. for ticket holders and movies begin at 7:30 p.m. with no late entry allowed.
Various movies that will be shown include “Back to The Future,” “Beetlejuice,” “Black Panther,” “Cars,” “E.T.,” “Friday Night Lights,” “Ghostbusters,” “The Goonies,” “The Karate Kid,” “The Lego Movie” and “The Wizard of Oz.”
Ahead of each feature presentation, audiences will screen one of a number of short films, including “Bilby,” “Bird Karma,” “Brooklyn Breeze,” “CROW: The Legend,” “Fire In Cardboard City,” “INVASION!,” “Looney Tunes’ Boo! Appetweet” and “Marooned. “
According to a statement, certain filmmakers and surprise guests will make appearances at select showings. Specifically, Drew Barrymore will be the virtual host for all events and will make a surprise in-person appearance at one location. Additionally, Peter Berg, Jennifer Garner, LeBron James and Chrissy Metz will all make either virtual or in-person appearances at select showings.
