Snow, freezing rain may impact evening, morning commutes
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory from 4 p.m. Monday through 11 a.m. Tuesday.
A mix of snow up to around an inch with a light glaze of ice from freezing rain is possible, according to the advisory for Allegheny, Washington and Westmoreland counties.
Roads could be slippery for the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes.
Snow that fell before dawn Monday caused slick roads in some spots.
In Pleasant Hills, a car went off Old Clairton Road and down a hill early Monday, the Tribune-Review’s news partner WPXI-TV reported. The driver was not hurt.
Some school districts delayed the start of classes Monday. Deer Lakes issued a two-hour delay.
Information on the latest closings and delays is available through WPXI-TV.
The Pittsburgh area was expected to be dry for most of the day Monday, meteorologist Mike Kennedy said.
While not much snow accumulation was expected, Kennedy said a problem in some areas would be freezing rain, depending on the ground temperature. While the forecast is for the ground to be warm enough for freezing rain to not be an issue, that will change if the forecast is off by a degree or two, he said.
”It’s possible if things change just a little bit, instead of sleet and rain overnight, it would be possible it might lean more toward a freezing rain event,” Kennedy said.
