Rita’s Italian Ice usually celebrates the first day of spring with free frozen treats.

But for the second year in a row, the coronavirus pandemic has iced those plans.

“With covid-19 still a part of communities, we’ve chosen to cancel free Italian Ice day on (March 20) to keep everyone safe,” the company wrote. “Don’t worry, we’re still open for business, and we look forward to celebrating with you soon.”

In past years, the frozen dessert chain gave out seven-ounce cup to customers.

Rita’s features 17 locations in Western Pennsylvania: Belle Vernon, Bethel Park, Castle Shannon, Cranberry, McMurray, McKees Rocks, Oakland, Penn Hills, Pittsburgh, Pleasant Hills, Scott, Squirrel Hill, Washington, Wexford, White Oak, as well as Kennywood and Sandcastle.
