Police: Fayette woman scammed by fake Amazon customer service number
A Fayette County woman who thought she was calling Amazon customer service ended up getting scammed by the person on the other end of the phone, according to state police.
The Springfield Township woman told troopers she didn’t receive an item she bought from the website and searched on March 8 for a customer service phone number online, according to a news release. Police said that phone number wasn’t legitimate.
The man on the phone instructed the woman to download software to her computer that allowed him access to it. Police said he purchased a $50 Amazon gift card through her computer and promised she would get a refund later.
Police said the woman wasn’t able to make contact with the suspect again.
