A 57-year-old Mt. Pleasant man was arrested by state police on multiple criminal charges, including attempted homicide, after allegedly firing a handgun at two men who confronted him about assaulting a woman at a public housing complex in Fayette County last weekend.

Charles Edward Chandler was arrested following the incident late Saturday outside of Hunters Ridge Apartments in Redstone Township. He was ordered held in the Fayette County Prison in Uniontown on $200,000 bail.

Chandler is charged with two counts each of attempted homicide and aggravated assault and one count each of illegal possession of firearm, simple assault, reckless endangerment and harassment.

Around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Chandler is accused of shooting at two men — the son and ex-husband of a woman Chandler was staying with in the apartment complex, Trooper Jason Zanolli reported. Zanolli said the two men confronted Chandler about throwing a beer can into the face of the woman and injuring her a day earlier.

Zanolli reported the men forcibly removed Chandler from the apartment and followed him to his 2003 Ford Mustang “to make sure he left.”

“Chandler opened the door of his vehicle and grabbed a handgun from underneath the seat and pointed it at them,” Zanolli wrote.

Police said Chandler fired numerous shots at the men before fleeing. According to court documents, the woman’s son, who had a license to carry a gun, returned fire.

Chandler was pulled over a short time later and taken into custody by troopers.

Zanolli reported Chandler has two prior felony convictions in 2014 for disarming a law enforcement officer and escape and is not allowed to have a firearm, police said.

Chandler has a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 3.
