Plumbing issue delays school start for some Brentwood students

High school and middle school students in the Brentwood School District will start the new school year two days late.

According to an announcement from the district, a plumbing issue near the middle/high school lobby will not be fixed in time for those students to arrive today.

Elroy and Moore schools will open today as expected. The middle/high school is expected to open Wednesday. The district said updates will be provided today and Tuesday via phone, email and on the district’s website.

Steel Center students will report on Tuesday, and will be transported to and from Steel Center. Students will be dismissed upon their return to the middle/high school on Tuesday, the district said.

Students receiving services in other districts will be transported beginning today, the district said. Students who split their time between a facility and Brentwood’s middle/high school will be dismissed upon return to the school.

All activities and athletic events will occur as scheduled.

Pittsburgh police find missing, endangered man

A missing man who was described as endangered has been found, Pittsburgh police said Monday morning.

Patrol officers found Donald Champion, 62, overnight and he is safe, police said.

Champion had last been seen around 10 a.m. Sunday leaving the 3200 block of Niagara Street. He was said to suffer from health issues including dementia.

Gas prices falling in run-up to Labor Day

Gas prices have been falling for four weeks leading to the Labor Day holiday, according to price tracking service GasBuddy.

Average gas prices in the Pittsburgh area have fallen 4.7 cents per gallon in the last week to an average of $3.69, while the national average has fallen 6.2 cents in the last week to an average of $3.30.

Pittsburgh area prices are 4 cents less than a month ago and about 13 cents less than a year ago, according to GasBuddy. The national average is down about 21 cents from a month ago, and 49 cents from a year ago.

“It seems fitting that, in the run-up to Labor Day, the national average has fallen for four straight weeks to its lowest point since February, giving Americans one last chance to hit the road with gas prices being less of a factor,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“GasBuddy is now tracking eight states where average gas prices are already below the $3 per gallon mark, along with nearly 20% of gas stations in the country selling gasoline at $2.99 or lower. These numbers will continue to look better every week as we move into fall.”
