Local, national gas prices continue to rise in spring run-up

After a week of no change, gas prices are on the rise again in the Pittsburgh area.

Pittsburgh gas prices have risen 1.3 cents per gallon in the past week to an average of $2.78 per gallon, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 731 stations. Prices are 10.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago, but 8.9 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.

Prices range from a low of $2.59 up to $2.89, a difference of 30 cents per gallon. Statewide, prices range from $2.15 up to $3.25, a difference of $1.10 per gallon.

The national average is up 3.9 cents per gallon to $2.69. That’s 26.5 cents more than a month ago, and 3.5 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. Nationally, prices range from $1.75 per gallon up to $4.99, a difference of $3.24.

Nationally, gas prices have continued to rise because of seasonal impacts, said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.

“The run-up this spring has felt worse than prior years, and thus far, the national average is up nearly 50 cents per gallon from our 2019 low. Unfortunately, this is a rut we’ll be stuck in yet for at least a few more weeks,” DeHaan said.

Oil prices closed above $60 per barrel last week, a new high in 2019, and President Trump has not been able to convince OPEC to respond, DeHaan said.

”What the president may not realize is that while oil prices have been a minor piece of the pie of rising gas prices, the bulk remains EPA mandates during the summer months that coincide with refineries doing work ahead of the intense demand during the summer in which most run near capacity,” he said.
