A 61-year-old Johnstown man died Monday in a crash along Route 22 in Indiana County that closed the highway for six hours.

Coroner Jerry Overman Jr. said Leroy Durant Jr. was partially ejected through the sunroof of a 2005 Buick Lacrosse that lost control on the highway, drove off the south berm and overturned several times about 2:30 p.m. in Burrell Township.

State police reported Durant and the other occupant of the car, another 61-year-old man also from Johnstown, were headed east when the accident occurred at the intersection of Palmer Road, east of Blairsville.

Trooper Eric Smith said the other occupant of the vehicle, who was not identified, was ejected and taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, where he was reported in critical condition.

Smith said investigators still are trying to determine who was driving the car.

According to police, as the vehicle approached Palmer Road, the car crossed from the left to the right lane and started to fishtail. The car went off the road, rolled several times and landed on its roof.

Durant was pronounced dead at the scene by Overman.

Smith said neither man was wearing a seat belt.
