Census officials are gearing up hiring efforts before the 2020 survey, and recruiting efforts will take place across Westmoreland and Allegheny counties this week.

Interested applicants can ask questions about available positions — which include census takers, recruiting assistants, and office and supervisory staff — and receive help submitting applications. Almost 3,000 positions are available in the area, with about 500,000 census takers needed nationally.

Sessions are from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Norwin Public Library in North Huntingdon; from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library; and from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Hill District branch.

Pay varies based on county. Workers in Westmoreland County will receive $16 per hour and those in Allegheny County will make $18.50 per hour.

Applicants must be at least 18. A resume is not required to apply.

The events are three of 35 scheduled across Southwestern Pennsylvania throughout the week. Other locations include Rochester, Monaca, Midland and New Brighton in Beaver County, Bessemer in Lawrence County and others. A full list can be found at 2020census.gov, where online applications are being accepted.
