The Women and Girls Foundation of Pittsburgh is making a pitch for the next generation of female leaders with its GirlGov program.

The free program is open to girls from Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Washington or Westmoreland counties entering grades 9 to 12 this fall. The foundation will launch GirlGov with a local retreat in Pittsburgh in September and has plans to hold meetings twice a month throughout the year to focus on women’s history, youth organizing and campaign development.

Although the program is free, participants must provide their own transportation to Pittsburgh for meetings.

Foundation leaders said the program will include presentations from local leaders and elected officials. GirlGov program will culminate in a trip to Harrisburg in the spring, where participants will shadow a state lawmaker for the day.

Applications are being accepted until June 15. For more information contact the Foundation at
