Monday might not be fun day, but it’s the best day of the week in most states to save money at the gas pump.
Drivers may be looking to save any way they can. Average gasoline prices are up 50 cents per gallon since January, with many metro areas across the nation seeing the largest seasonal rise in prices since 2012, according to price analyst GasBuddy.
Prices may keep going up through Memorial Day.
After analyzing gas price data from January through March, GasBuddy found the lowest average gas prices are offered on Monday in 30 states, making it the best day to fill-up.
That’s true for Pittsburgh. But for the state as a whole, Pennsylvania is one of 19 where the best day is Tuesday.
The worst day in Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania — Friday.
“As the week progresses and our excitement builds for the weekend, gas prices also tend to rise,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “The most expensive day to fill-up remains Friday when looking at averages, while 16 states saw Saturday have the highest average price.
“Sundays represented the third-worst day to fill up, bringing our study to a conclusion that weekends are the worst time to fill up,” he said. “You might as well flush money down the toilet.”
For those looking to avoid lines, GasBuddy found stations across the country are the least busy on Sundays, followed by Mondays; Fridays are the busiest days.
“While filling up on a Sunday can save time, it doesn’t save money,” DeHaan said. “Our data shows that filling up on a Monday morning each week can collectively save drivers $2.1 billion and avoid the possibility of playing bumper cars at the pumps.”
