Gasoline prices dip below $2 per gallon in spots as oil prices continue to sag

While not the case in the Pittsburgh area, nearly 5,000 stations across the United States are selling gasoline for less than $2 per gallon, according to price tracking service GasBuddy.

“Oil prices continue to sag on worries over the spread of the coronavirus, blowing the door wide open for a continued slump at the pump,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. “For most, there’s no signs of the slump slowing.”

In the Pittsburgh area, gas prices have fallen 7.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.67, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 731 stations. That’s 17.3 cents per gallon lower than a month ago, but 20 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

The national average price has fallen 4.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.45. That’s down 13.3 cents per gallon from a month ago, but 19.9 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices:

• Akron — $2.39, up 10.6 cents per gallon from last week.

• Cleveland — $2.43, unchanged from last week.

• West Virginia — $2.42, down 6.1 cents per gallon from last week.
