Gasoline prices dropped over the past week in the Pittsburgh area and across the nation.

In the Pittsburgh area, prices are down 2.2 cents to an average of $2.78 per gallon, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 731 stations. That’s 6.1 cents per gallon less than a month ago, and 9.6 cents per gallon less than a year ago.

The national average came down 3.3 cents per gallon to an average of $2.58. That’s 7.7 cents per gallon less than a month ago, and 1.8 cents per gallon less than a year ago.

“As we approach the holiday season, gas prices continue to see some volatility, but thankfully ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, prices appear to be in a downward trend in most areas,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.

Elsewhere, GasBuddy said per-gallon gas prices averaged $2.49 in Akron, $2.53 in Cleveland and $2.54 in West Virginia.
