Gas prices continue decline as summer driving season begins

Gasoline prices continued falling last week as the summer travel season got underway, according to price-tracking website GasBuddy.com.

Prices at gas stations in the Pittsburgh area dropped 5 cents in the past week to an average of $3.05 per gallon, according to GasBuddy and its daily survey of 731 stations. That’s 5.3 cents per gallon lower than a month ago, and 12.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.

Prices in the Pittsburgh area ranged from a low of $2.85 up to $3.29, GasBuddy said.

The national average price fell 2.4 cents per gallon over the past week to an average of $2.82 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. The national average was down 6 cents per gallon from a month ago and 14.1 cents per gallon from a year ago.

Nationally, prices range from a low of $2.03 per gallon up to $5.19.

More declines in prices are on the way, said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.

“While the next 90 days may see some bumps in the road here and there, most motorists will be greeted with prices under $3 per gallon for a majority of the summer while the West Coast will see continued relief and prices likely above the $3 mark for most of the summer, but under the $4 levels we saw in the last month,” he said.

DeHaan said potential threats to those lower prices include “unexpected refinery outages mainly in challenged areas like the Midwest or West Coast, a potential trade deal between the U.S. and China and any rise in Middle East tensions, mainly between the U.S. and Iran.”
