A driver in Washington County was killed when a tree fell on his vehicle during a severe storm Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

Floyd Gregory Stephen, 53, of Follansbee, W.Va., was dead at the scene in Canton Township.

According to the Washington County Coroner’s Office, the wreck occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. as the car was headed west in the 2900 block of Jefferson Avenue.

A passenger in the vehicle said a tree on the opposite side of the road began to fall and landed on the roof, according to officials. The passenger was taken to Washington Hospital.

A passing motorist reported the wreck to 911.

Additional details weren’t immediately available.

A ruling on the cause and manner of the death are pending an autopsy and investigation, according to the coroner’s office. State police also are investigating.

PennDOT and ambulance crews and the Canton Township Fire Department assisted at the scene.
