Gas prices moved lower in the Pittsburgh area and across the nation in the past week, according to the price-tracking website GasBuddy.com.

In the Pittsburgh area, the average price dropped 1.2 cents per gallon to an average of $2.85, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 731 stations. That’s 2.3 cents per gallon more than a month ago, and 10.1 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

The national average price is down 1.6 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.58. That’s 1.6 cents per gallon less than a month ago, but 14.7 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, said December gas prices “typically trend lower during the month as refiners continue to increase throughput after maintenance season and as overall weather curbs gasoline demand, easing prices.”

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices:

• Akron — $2.60, up 22.3 cents per gallon from last week;

• Cleveland — $2.59, up 11.8 cents per gallon from last week;

• West Virginia — $2.53, down 0.5 cents per gallon from last week.
