As U.S. average gas price falls to near $3, a few Pittsburgh-area stations are already there

While Pennsylvania remains among states with the highest average gas prices, a few stations in the Pittsburgh area are at, and in one case below, the $3 mark.

According to price-tracking service GasBuddy, an American Oil on Route 422 in Worthington had a cash price of $2.86 on Monday, the lowest in the Pittsburgh area. Four others — a BP on Buffalo Street in Freeport, a Sheetz on Ohio River Boulevard in Baden, a Sunoco on Curry Hollow Road in Baldwin and a Jiffy Mini Mart on Route 422 in Worthington — were at $2.99, while an Ashland on Duss Avenue in Ambridge was reported at an even $3.

GasBuddy reported prices in the Pittsburgh area between $2.99 and $3.89 per gallon, a difference of 90 cents. Statewide prices ranged from $2.95 to $4.59, a difference of $1.64.

The average price in the Pittsburgh area was $3.41, down about 2 cents from a week ago, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 731 stations. That’s about 15 cents per gallon less than a month ago and nearly 30 cents less than a year ago.

The Pittsburgh area recorded its highest average price for regular unleaded, about $5.05, on June 12, 2022, according to AAA.

The national average was just above $3 per gallon at $3.03, according to GasBuddy.

“Sluggish gasoline demand has led to the national average easing again, and brings back the potential for the national average to drift under $3 per gallon for the first time since 2021,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“With a record rise in gasoline inventories last week as demand was anemic during the holidays, motorists have provided the catalyst for falling prices. If demand remains weak, gasoline prices could fall further.”
