It’s tax day, or at least it would have been.

When coronavirus turned the world on its axis, Congress and the Pennsylvania General Assembly reacted quickly to provide temporary relief. So, here are five things you need to know today:

1. The deadline for filing federal income tax returns has been delayed until July 15. Those who owe taxes can extend their obligation until then without penalties, interest or fees. But you will still owe those taxes come July 15.

2. Pennsylvania likewise extended the state income tax filing deadline until July 15. But you still owe what you owe.

3. If you are owed a refund, it might be wise to file immediately. You don’t want Uncle Sam holding on to cash you may need.

4. The IRS is permitting retirees who must take an annual minimum distribution from a retirement account to suspend taking that payment this year.

5. Pennsylvania lawmakers are weighing a measure to extend the discount period for spring property taxes until Aug. 31, but have yet to vote on it. So, as of now, those discount deadlines on your tax duplicate stand. Stay tuned.
