Pittsburgh police arrested a man late Sunday after responding to a report of a man pointing a gun at people at a gas station in the Crawford-Roberts neighborhood.

Kevin Tyrone Bennett, 50, of Spartanburg, S.C., was charged Monday with discharging a firearm and tampering with evidence in connection with the incident. He was taken to Allegheny County Jail after failing to post $7,500 bail.

Police said officers responded to a report of a man at the Shell gas station at 1605 Fifth Ave. just before midnight Sunday. While on the way, officers were told the man had pointed a gun at several people.

Police did not see anyone matching the man’s description at the gas station.

Officers were told a man was seen brandishing a firearm nearby on Vine Street, followed by the sound of a single gunshot in the area of Vine and Our Way.

Police said officers saw a man matching the suspect’s description flee up Vine near Colwell Street. They then heard rustling in a wooded area and came across a single grey shoe on a pathway.

Police said they set up a perimeter and, soon after, a man identified as Bennett, wearing one shoe, came out of the woods and walked toward officers on Colwell, where he was detained.

A discarded gun was found near a dumpster on Our Way, police said.

Bennett did not have an attorney listed in court records. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 27.
