Pittsburgh police said they have arrested 18 people on drug charges in Downtown Pittsburgh since June 28.

Officials said Narcotics & Vice detectives have been investigating multiple drug trafficking complaints stemming from Downtown, leading to the arrests.

The majority of the arrests have resulted in felony charges for drug delivery or possession with intent to deliver, said police.

Drug activity and open drug use have increased in Downtown over the years, with some residents and business owners lobbying complaints at city officials.

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey tripled the amount of officers in Downtown, despite an overall officer shortage.

Police said they have recovered large quantities of heroin, crack cocaine, designer pills, marijuana, cash, as well as one gun as part of the recent arrests.
