A woman was killed Monday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash that also seriously injured a second woman in Pittsburgh’s South Side Flats.

Mary Alice Bendick, 60, of White Oak was pronounced dead at about 3:30 p.m., according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The crash happened at about 1 p.m. along the 3900 block of East Carson Street, Pittsburgh Public Safety spokeswoman Emily Bourne said.

A pickup was traveling east when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with an SUV heading west, she said.

The truck rolled over in the street and the SUV went through a guardrail and down an embankment toward the nearby railroad tracks. The driver of the SUV required extrication by rescue crews.

The woman driving the truck was hospitalized in serious condition.

The woman driving the SUV died a short time later at a hospital.

A third vehicle was also damaged in the crash, Bourne said.

East Carson Street was reopened to traffic shortly before 4 p.m.
