Powderpuff football tradition spreads in Plum

Powderpuff games are a high school tradition, and at Plum Senior High, they’ve taken place for the past three decades.

But for the first time in the school district’s history, some younger girls had their chance to shine on the football field as Plum Middle School held its first powderpuff game on Oct. 27 at the high school.

Just like the high school’s event, the middle school student government sponsored the game alongside several faculty volunteers. Social studies teacher Erin Morris coordinated the event.

“I hope we can keep the event going from year to year, making this an annual event for our middle schoolers and the Plum community to look forward to each year,” she said.

In the high school game, seniors play juniors, with the 12th-graders traditionally winning. In the middle school game, eighth-graders were pitted against seventh-graders, with the latter pulling off a 7-0 upset in a defensive battle.

The game’s lone touchdown was scored by Emeryson Lorish, with the extra point added on by Kiersten Sully. The eighth-grade team was coached by James Horwatt and Jaylon Ansell, and the seventh-graders by Ashley Boyers, Gina Dankmyer, Amber Soxman and Shannon Cecchetti.

The high school game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 7 on the Mustangs football field. Tickets are $5 per person with the proceeds going to TJD Spread Positivity, Cure JM Foundation and Palm Beach County Cares.
