Parade, memorial service set in Oakmont, Verona

The Oakmont-Verona Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service is scheduled for May 30.

The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. along James Street by the Fraternal Order of Eagles lodge in Verona.

The route travels along Allegheny River Boulevard to Pennsylvania Avenue in Oakmont, where the memorial service will be held at the cemetery.

Those who will be marching in the parade should enter at Center and East Railroad avenues in Verona for the parade lineup. The Memorial Day parade and ceremony have been a tradition in the Twin Boroughs since 1892.

Oakmont Lions Club plants flowers on veterans’ graves

The Oakmont Lions Club will plant geraniums on the graves of veterans in the Verona Cemetery in preparation for the Memorial Day Service.

Planting will take place at 9 a.m. May 28.

The Lions and volunteers from the community will plant 700 flowers ahead of the May 30 parade and service.

Organizers said there are service men and women buried in the cemetery from conflicts as far back to the Civil War who no longer have family to decorate their graves. The flowers are a way to thank them for their service and know that they are not forgotten.

Those who would like to donate to help offset the cost of the geraniums can send a check to Oakmont Lions Club, P.O. Box 335, Oakmont, Pa. 15139. Please mark “Geranium Fund” on the check.

Activities scheduled at Plum Borough Community Library

Plum Borough Community Library’s upcoming activities include a puzzle swap on May 21, in which participants can bring up to five puzzles to trade. Pleas confirm that all pieces are in place.

On May 24, Painting and Piano on the Patio is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Academy Award-winning movie “Coda” will be shown at 1 and 5:30 p.m. May 25.
