Athletes honored by Plum Borough School Board

Thirty-Eight athletes were honored at the April Plum Borough School Board meeting for their achievements during the winter sports season.

The students participated on the high school’s air rifle, basketball, bowling team, gymnastics, swimming and wrestling teams.

Alaina Claassen of the junior high’s wrestling team was also honored as Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling girls junior high state champion and Keystone girls state champion, the first ever Plum wrestler, of either gender to ever win two state titles in the same year.

Honorees were:

• Air Rifle — third-place team in division at National JROTC Championship, members Michael Scarpino, Emma Killmeyer, Tyson Cobb, Anastasia Joyner, James Callaghan, Xander Thorwart (sixth-place individual)

• Basketball (girls), coached by Rich Mull — Megan Marston, Big 56 all-section first team, Valley News Dispatch first team all-star; Dannika Susko, Big 56 all-sections second team

• Basketball (boys), coached by Mark Marino — Cameron Moss, Big 56 all-section honorable mention

• Bowling, coached by Darryl Pilyih and Bob Small — Mareana Pilyih, Western Regional Tournament girls singles champion, third place states; Nicholas Daniels, WPIBL boys singles champion; Cade Schimmer, state qualifier

• Gymnastics, coached by Renee Ruggeri — Sarah Kvortek, WPIAL championship, first-place All-Around state champion

• Swimming, coached by Shawn Haupt — WPIAL championship; Giulianna Ricciuti and Elizabeth Glasspool, state qualifiers; Sam Schohn, fourth-place states; Matthew Glasspool, Maddox Sciullo, Ethan Schohn, Nina Ricciuti, Reese Schollaert, Emma Sullivan, Maggie Messina, Kaileigh Smith, Amelia Faust

Wrestling, coached Michael Supak, WPIAL AAA regional championship — Vince Citrano, sixth place, 100-plus career wins; Sam Snyder, sixth place; Rylen Campbell, Andrew Claassen, Antonino Walker, Carson Yocca, Sam Snyder, PWCA All-Pennsylvania Academic Team; Dylan Overcash, Jack Tongel, Frank Macioce, Ollie Freeman.
