The bridge over a railroad line, on West North Avenue at Brighton Road, that will close Aug. 31.

Pittsburgh’s North Avenue Bridge at Brighton Road is closing to vehicle traffic on Wednesday.

The city said it decided to close the North Side span, which goes over a Norfolk Southern rail line at a corner of Allegheny Commons Park, after an “updated structural analysis” was conducted.

Norfolk Southern is finalizing designs for a replacement bridge, the city said. Construction of the new bridge is expected to begin in 2025. Officials did not say how long construction is expected to last.

Detour signs will be posted to guide motorists around the closed bridge via Western and Pennsylvania avenues, the city said.

Motorists should expect “minor delays” until the replacement project is done, the city said.

The closure will not impact the Brighton Road portion of the bridge, which is posted with a 10-ton weight restriction, officials said.

The bridge was one of dozens ranked in poor condition in a comprehensive bridge report released in December.
