Pittsburgh children 15 and under will be able to swim for free at any of the city’s 15 open pools this summer.

“It’s all about … giving them opportunities for a safe, fun summer,” Mayor Ed Gainey said.

Pittsburgh children had needed to have a recreation center membership tag to access Pittsburgh pools for free. City officials said that requirement will be waived this summer.

Free swimming also is available for disabled veterans, active-duty military and activated reservist guard members who are city residents.

Other residents and non-residents are able to purchase season tags or pay a daily admission fee.

Daily admission tickets at any pool cost $3 for non-resident children ages 3 to 15 and $5 for adults 16 and older for residents and non-residents alike.

Season tags cost $30 for Pittsburgh residents 16 or older and $20 for city residents 60 and older. Families of four can buy season tags for $60, with an additional $10 charge for each additional member.

Residents need to show proof of city residency to get the discounted.

City residents who receive government assistance can buy tags at half price, but they’ll need to show proper identification and a case print-out.

Non-residents can buy season passes for $45.

Pittsburgh opened 15 of its 18 pools this season after struggling to hire the necessary lifeguards.
